Abbas accuses Israel of failing obligations to Int'l agreements

ANKARA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of failing its obligations for international agreements and not sticking to the peace plan here on Friday.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in the Turkish capital of Ankara, Abbas said that Israel rejected a solution based on the coexistence of two independent states and refused to freeze new settlements in the territory under Israeli invasion.

He said the Palestinians, on the other hand, fulfilled the international obligations and were loyal to the Middle East peace plan.

Abbas said the upcoming Al-Fatah Congress, the first since 1989,would follow a busy agenda, due to the issues of the past 20 years, adding that they were ready to continue dialogue with Hamas, the other influential faction in Palestine.

Abbas's trip came days after his remarks reportedly supporting the thesis of Greek Cypriots in the dispute over the divided island during a recent visit to southern Cyprus sparked controversy.

Abbas arrived in Turkey on Thursday, and met Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan over dinner.

Abbas and Gul will later attend the inauguration of the new embassy building and residence of the Palestinians.
