CAIRO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The accusations made by Farouq al-Qadoumi against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas regarding the death of leader Yasser Arafat harm Palestinian reconciliation, said Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki on Thursday.
"It is better for all Palestinian leaders to pursue reconciliation, renounce split and stop raising useless issues," said Zaki in a statement.
The spokesman said Egypt is continuing its concerted efforts to bridge the gap among the Palestinian factions so as to reach reconciliation, adding that Egypt trusts and appreciates Abbas.
Al-Qadoumi, a senior leader in both Fatah movement and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said in an interview on Tuesday with al-Jazeera TV that Abbas conspired with Fatah official Mohammed Dahlan and Israel to kill his predecessor Yasser Arafat, who died in 2004 at a French hospital of an unknown type of poison.
On Thursday, Abbas rejected the accusations, denouncing the allegation as an attempt to spoil a party congress. Al-Qadoumi's remarks were aimed at "blocking Fatah from holding its general congress" which has not been convened for 20 years, he said.
The Fatah conference will take place as scheduled in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Aug. 4 "in spite of al-Qadoumi's lies," Abbas said.
