Russia not to interfere in formation of Lebanon's cabinet, says envoy

BEIRUT, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Sultanov said on Thursday that Russia will not interfere in the formation of a new cabinet in Lebanon which is the task of the Lebanese, local Elnashra website reported.

After meeting with Lebanese designated Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Sultanov expressed his contentment towards the positive developments in Lebanon," stressing that the formation of a new cabinet in Lebanon is not an easy task.

Sultanov also stressed that Russia does not accept any settlement in the region which would be at the cost of Lebanon.

Saad Hariri has been trying for 20 days to form a new cabinet, but did not make any progress yet. The obstacles in forming a unity government has been mainly the differences over granting the opposition veto power or proportional representation.

Sultanov arrived at dawn Thursday for a two-day visit to Beirut. He met in the morning with the Head of Hezbollah parliamentary block MP Mohammad Raad and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, and is expected to meet a number of other Lebanese officials to discuss the Middle East peace process and the preparations for the Moscow conference.

Russia plans to hold an international peace conference on the Middle East in Moscow under the framework of two-state solution by the end of this year.

Sultanov is on a Mideast trip, which also includes Syria, Jordan, Palestinian territories and Israel, to push forward the Moscow conference.

Moscow sent Sultanov to the region because he is the Russian envoy for the Middle East Quartet, comprising the European Union, Russia, the UN and the United States, according to the Al-Mustaqbal daily.
