Presidential candidate: aid suspension unfair punishment to Hondurans

TEGUCIGALPA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Suspension of international aid to Honduras is an unfair punishment to the Honduran people, said Honduran opposition National Party's presidential candidate on Tuesday.

"It is totally unfair that the people have to be punished for political reason," Porfirio Lobo said, referring to the decision from many countries to suspend their aid to Honduras as a way to condemn the June 28 coup.

Lobo called on countries worldwide and international organizations not to withdraw financing for social development programs from Honduras.

Lobo also stressed that those who were suffering were the people with fewer resources.

After the coup, Honduras was expelled from the Organization of American States (OAS), and lost its access to loans and credits from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration.

The World Bank also suspended 270 million U.S. dollars of funds to Honduras, while the United States said it will suspend aid programs to Honduras ranging from military, basic education and environment to family control.

Honduras is listed by the United Nations as the third poorest country in Latin America, after Haiti and Bolivia.
