NEW YORK, July 21 (Xinhua) -- A 37-year-old Jersey City, NJ police officer critically wounded last week in a shootout with two robbery suspects, in which four other police officers were also wounded, died on Tuesday, officials said.
Marc Anthony DiNardo, assigned to the police Emergency Squad of Jersey City, across the Hudson River from New York City in the U.S. state of New Jersey, was shot on Thursday as he and fellow officers came under fire from a fugitive gunman sought in several states along the eastern coast of the United States, Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy said in a statement.
The two suspects and the wife of one of them were killed in the apartment building shootout, authorities said. DiNardo, who was promoted to detective following the shooting, was the most seriously wounded officer, authorities said.
The second officer critically wounded, Michael Comacho, was upgraded on Tuesday to serious but guarded condition, a police spokesman told Xinhua.
"This is such a great loss to us, our community and our city," said the mayor. "We call on police officers to do things and settle problems we wouldn't ask of the people closest to us in our lives. And that's a special trust we have in police. And that's why this loss is indeed a great one."
DiNardo, who would have been 38 years old Wednesday, was the father of three children, 1-4 years of age. He was the 38th Jersey City police officer to die in the line of duty, the Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) said.
