TEHRAN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Iran's opposition leaders Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi appealed for permission to hold a memorial ceremony for the country's post-presidential election unrest victims, local Press TV reported Sunday.
In a letter to Iran's Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli on Sunday, the two former presidential candidates appealed for a public mourning ceremony to honor those who lost their lives in sporadic demonstrations last month, the report said.
They said in the letter that the ceremony would involve no speeches and will "fully focus on recitals from Holy Quran," adding that "participants are required to pay their respects in silence."
Meanwhile, Iran's reformist opposition leaders Saturday urged the country's senior clerics to help release the protestors arrested following the disputed June 12 presidential election.
About 20 people were killed, more than 1,000 protestors and dozens of reformist activists were reportedly arrested during the post-election rallies. The authorities said that most of the detainees have been released.
On June 13, the Iranian interior minister announced that incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won 62.63 percent of the total ballots, while his main rival Mousavi got 33.75 percent.
After the official declaration, all the three defeated candidates filed complaints over irregularities in the election, while Mousavi and Karroubi demanded an annulment of the election.
However, the Guardians Council refused to annul the election results. Ahmadinejad is scheduled to take the oath for his second term as president in early August.
