Israeli attorney general closes real estate case against Olmert

JERUSALEM, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Attorney General Menachem Mazuz decided to close a case against former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert over his purchase of an upscale house in Jerusalem due to lack of evidence, said the Justice Ministry Monday.

Mazuz held a hearing with several prosecutors and attorneys on the case, in which Olmert allegedly bought the house at the Jerusalem's Cremieux Street at a substantial discount in 2004 with offering favors to the builder in return.

"The evidence gathered was not sufficient to prove the suspicion investigated," local daily Ha'aretz quoted Mazuz as saying.

The police has announced in March to close the three-year investigation to the case due to insufficient evidence.

Yet several other cases are still pending against Olmert, who was forced to resign last year in the midst of a series of corruption and fraud allegations against him.

Mazuz said he might indict Olmert in several cases, including the "Investment Center" case, during which he allegedly arranged investment opportunities for a former confidant, the Jerusalem Post reported.
