TEHRAN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Association of Combatant Clerics called for a referendum in Iran to solve the current crisis concerning the disputed presidential election, local ILNA news agency reported Monday on its website.
"According to the Constitution, the only way to solve current crisis is to organize a referendum," the reformist clerics group said in a statement.
"In the recent presidential election, the public confidence was seriously damaged...millions of people have doubts about the election, because people's votes were controlled and the result of the election which has been announced is not what the people really want," it said.
The statement also echoed the ideas of former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani by saying "If we want the welfare of revolution and nation, all should be serious about the advice of Hashemi (Rafsanjani) and implement his ideas."
Rafsanjani called during his Friday prayer address broadcasted live on state radio for a solution to the current situation in Iran in the framework of laws.
He said "A large group of Iranians have doubts about last month's disputed presidential election...something should be done about the situation."
He considered reconstruction of people's trust as an important task to confront the current situation.
The powerful cleric also called for the release of protesters detained during the unrest after Iran's disputed 10th presidential election last month.
After incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was announced as the winner of the June 12 presidential election, Iran has been the scene of a series of protests and unrest.
According to Press TV, Iran's police have arrested 457 people in the post-election violence which has left at least 20 dead and hundreds of others injured.
On June 29, the Guardian Council confirmed the vote result, announcing the election file was closed.
