DAMASCUS, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday discussed with the U.S. special envoy to Middle east George Mitchell the prospects of Middle east peace process and bilateral relations, the official Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
In his talks with Mitchell, al-Assad highlighted his country's demands on "the Arab's rights to recover their occupied land through a just and comprehensive peace based on the international references, legitimate resolutions and land for peace principle," SANA said.
Mitchell told reporters in a press statement following the meeting that U.S. would like to welcome Syria's full cooperation "in this historic endeavor" in promoting the Mideast peace process.
The senior U.S. diplomat described his meeting with President al-Assad as "candid, important and positive."
U.S. President Barack Obama is determined to reach a comprehensive peace between Arabs and Israelis, considering that comprehensive peace is the only way towards "security, stability and prosperity" in the region, the envoy added.
Mitchell also stressed his country's commitment to developing dialogues and bilateral ties based on mutual respect and common interests.
Mitchell arrived in Damascus late Saturday for his second visit to Syria since June and was due to leave for Israel later on Sunday.
The Barack Obama administration has tried to re-engage Syria as the country, neighboring Israel and Iraq, to play an important role in the Middle East peace process.
Obama decided last month to return an ambassador to Syria after a four-year diplomatic absence. The decision followed a series of recent visits to Damascus by a number of high-level U.S. military and diplomatic delegations.
