Talks between Syrian president and U.S. Mideast envoy is positiveand constructive

DAMASCUS, June 26 (Xinhua)-- The talks between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the visiting U.S. Middle East Envoy George Mitchell was "positive and constructive", Presidential Political and Media Advisor Buthaina Shaaban told reporters on Sunday, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

President al-Assad Sunday discussed with the U.S. special envoy Mitchell the prospects of Mideast peace process and the bilateral relations, SANA said.

The senior U.S. diplomat told reporters that his meeting with President al-Assad was "candid, important and positive."

"A dialogue began between Syria and the U.S., we believe it will continue, and hope its results will be positive on the medium and long run," Dr. Shaaban was quoted as saying.

The senior advisor described the atmosphere as positive, adding that "the messages coming to us from President Obama stress his administration's determination and resolve to open a new page with Syria totally different from the past, based on mutual respect and common interest as well as the establishment of peace and security in the region."

Mitchell arrived in Damascus late Saturday for his second visit to Syria since June and on Sunday afternoon he left for Israel, where he met with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Later on Sunday, Mitchell arrived in Egypt, where he is due to have talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday morning in an effort to promote peace process in the Middle East.
