UN official calls on Israel to end violations of Lebanon's sovereignty

BEIRUT, July 20 (Xinhua) -- UN special coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams on Monday called on Israel to put an end to its daily violations of Lebanon's sovereignty.

Following his meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri in Beirut, Williams called on all sides to exercise "self-restraint" and to assure the implementation of UN resolution 1701, local Elnashra website reported.

Lebanon complains of Israel carrying out reconnaissance flights over Lebanon almost on daily basis, while a large Israeli-linked spying network was uncovered by the Lebanese security last May.

However, Israeli army condemned a recent incident across Israel-Lebanon border as a violation of resolution 1701.

Over the weekend, a group of 15 Lebanese citizens carrying Hezbollah and Lebanese flags walked into an area disputed by the two countries.

Williams told Hariri that the United Nations was ready to support him in any way possible to form a new cabinet, stressing that the international community and the UN were "eagerly waiting for the new government" and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was "personally following up the case."

Hariri was designated by President Michel Suleiman in early July to form a new cabinet, but obstacles on the shape of the government are hindering the formation.
