U.S. authorities look into helicopter crash in Maryland

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Investigation was still underway on the cause of a helicopter crash in the U.S. state of Maryland that killed four people, said authorities on Friday.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Kitty Higgins told reporters that investigators have not yet found out why the helicopter crashed on Interstate 70 and caught fire late Thursday night, killing all four persons aboard but injuring no one on the ground.

According to local emergency officials, visibility was limited by fog when the crash took place, since storms just swept the area earlier in the night.

Local authorities identified the pilot and two of the victims as employees of the Advanced Helicopter Concepts, a Maryland-based company, and the fourth person on board was a friend who flew back to Frederick with them from a meeting to raise money for troubled youth in Hagerstown.

The helicopter went down after it hit power lines over the highway, and was engulfed in flames, said witnesses.

The interstate lanes were temporarily shut down in both directions after the incident, but already reopened to traffic on Friday morning.
