WASHINGTON, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. government will launch a massive terrorism prevention exercise that involves law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the country and abroad, said its emergency management department on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the five-day National Level Exercise 2009 starts on Monday when all security officials at all levels in the country and four others join the operation in response to a fictional terrorist attack outside the U.S..
It "will be the first major exercise conducted by the United States government that will focus exclusively on terrorism prevention and protection, as opposed to incident response and recovery," said the statement.
The participants to the exercise will be tested on their coordination, intelligence and terror prevention skills to stop a hypothetical follow-up attack in the country.
"Lessons learned from the exercise will provide valuable insights to guide future planning for securing the nation against terrorist attacks, disasters, and other emergencies," said the emergency response agency.
Apart from federal, regional, state, tribal, local and private sectors throughout the U.S., those agencies that are based in Britain, Mexico, Canada and Australia will also take part in the exercise, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
"Coordinating with our partners across the United States and around the world is critical to protecting the nation from terrorists attacks," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
"The National Level Exercise allows us to test our capabilities in real-time to refine and strengthen our strategies for preventing terrorist attacks," she added.
