Gunman kills broadcaster in S Philippines

COTABATO, Philippines, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A radio broadcaster was shot dead by an unidentified gunman Monday morning in the southern Philippines, the police said.

The victim, Godofredo Linao, 49, was killed outside his office in the township of Barobo in Surigao del Sur province, said Danilo Obienza, a local police officer.

Linao was about to board his motorbike near the radio station' soffice when a gunman approached and shot at him.

Obienza said the victim died of multiple bullet wounds from .45 pistol used by his attacker.

The police are investigating the case and a manhunt is on against the perpetrator.

The Philippines is rated one of the most dangerous place in theworld for journalists as outspoken and bold media practitioners usually become the victim of political struggles or personal grudges.

Last year, at least 109 reporters and media workers were killed all over the world, at least eight of them in the Philippines, according to the International Federation of Journalists.
