COTABATO, Philippines, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A suspected leftist rebel shot dead a drill operator who worked for a joint-venture mining firm in southern Philippines, the police said on Monday.
The victim, Jimmy Cabilin, worked as drill operator of the United Phil Drilling that is under contract with the Saguitarius Mining Inc. to conduct drilling operations. Cabilin was attacked and killed while walking towards the drilling site in Tampakan town, South Cotabato province on Sunday night.
Provincial police director Robert Kiunisala identified the suspect as Narsing Gulae, an alleged member of the New People's Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
The rebel group has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades. Government officials said earlier that peace talks are set to resume in August between the Philippine government and the leftist rebels.
Sagittarius Mines Inc., exploring gold and copper in the boundaries of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao Del Sur, is controlled by Xstrata, a global diversified mining group listed on the London and Swiss Stock Exchanges with its headquarters in Zug, Switzerland. The Tampakan mine, which Sagittarius Mines Inc. has been developing, is Xstrata's largest copper development project in Asia.
