COTABATO, the Philippines, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Gunmen shot dead a town mayor in southern Philippines for suspected political motives, police officers reported Monday.
Abdul Ayon, mayor of Malangas township in Zamboanga Sbugay, was killed outside a shopping mall in Pagadian city on Sunday, said police chief Senior Inspector Michael Palermo.
Palermo told a local radio station the gunman fled on board a motorcycle after confirming Ayon's death.
Investigators said Ayon's death might be politically motivated.
In Philippines, political murder usually tilts up whenever an election is looming. The constitution provides that a national election is to be held in June 2010, during which a president, a vice-president, more than 200 lawmakers and a number of local officials will be elected.
