JAKARTA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian police detained a man who had been recruited by Noordin Mohammad Top, the prime suspect behind last week's suicide bomb attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton, in Central Java province on Thursday, the provincial police chief Alex Bambang Riatmodhjo said.
The police chief said that the man arrested in the Cilacap district had confessed that he had been once recruited by Top, the coordinator of Southeast Asia militant network of Jemaah Islamiah, for conducting bombings with the reward of eternal life in heaven.
"We have arrested the man, and he would be brought to the police headquarters," Riatmodhjo quoted by Metro TV as saying in the province.
Top has been the most wanted man by police because he was suspected of playing a key role in a series of major deadly explosions in the southeast Asia's largest economy, which included the churches explosion in 2000, the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005,JW Marriot Hotel blasts in 2003 and Australian embassy bombings in2004, and the attacks on JW Marriot and Ritz Carlton that killed nine and injured 53 more.
Police have found similarities in the method and equipment of the bombs used in the July 17 suicide bombings with those used at the Bali bombings and the bomb found in the recent raid in a house in Cilacap of Central Java.
The Malaysian-born Top is believed by police as the most likely mastermind of the July 17 blasts.
According to experts, Top has been predicted to lead a radical splinter faction of the Jemaah Islamiyah movement, after the split of the group.
