S Korean ex-president back on respirator for breathing difficulties

SEOUL, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung was again back on a respirator on Thursday as he showed difficulties in breathing, hospital officials said.

According to Seoul's Severance Hospital, the 85-year-old former president was sent to an intensive care unit earlier in the morning due to pulmonary complications, and put on a respirator.

His vital signs, however, are returning back to a normal state, the hospital added.

Kim was hospitalized on July 13 as he showed symptoms of pneumonia, and put on a respirator three days later, which the doctors removed on July 19 with signs of improvement.

Kim, taking office in 1998, served as president for five years, during which he met with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong-il for the first time since the armistice of the Korean War.

During his presidency, Kim also won the Nobel Prize for his "lifelong" strife for democracy and efforts to realize reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
